Pokémon Champions Sand Teams

A sand team is built to win slowly. Sand Stream raises a sandstorm for five turns as its user switches in, and for as long as it blows, every Pokémon that is not Rock, Ground or Steel loses one sixteenth of its health at the end of each turn. Rock-types gain 50% Special Defense, Sand Rush users move at double Speed, and Sand Force raises the power of Rock, Ground and Steel moves by 30%. The chip damage is negligible on any single turn. The archetype exists because it is never about a single turn.

Sand is the only weather whose central effect works while you do nothing, and that changes what the team around it should look like. It needs a Sand Stream setter, bodies durable enough to sit through chip they are either immune to or can absorb, and a Sand Rush attacker to close once the opponent has been worn down. Bulk is not a concession here, it is the engine: every turn the game continues is a turn the arithmetic moves further in your direction. The setter re-establishes sand on re-entry, so one is sufficient.

Sand beats frail teams, passive teams, and anything that needed the game to be short. Its structural weaknesses match every other weather: a competing ability overwrites it, and losing the setter ends the pressure. The problem specific to sand is immunity. Rock, Ground and Steel opponents take no chip at all, so against them the plan collapses into ordinary combat, and fast teams that ignore attrition entirely can finish before the arithmetic has time to matter. A sand team needs a route to victory that does not require the opponent to agree to a long game.

Yes, provided the team treats the chip as incidental rather than essential. The Special Defense boost for Rock-types, the Speed from Sand Rush and the 30% from Sand Force all apply whether or not the opponent is losing health each turn. Sand is also the weather that loses the least when it is overwritten, because the bulk it encourages remains on the field after the sandstorm has gone. Think of the chip as the reward for a game that runs long, not as the reason to play the archetype.
